This is my “Coyote Ugly” story. Yesterday morning I had an encounter with one of our coyote friends. Simply put, the result was Coyotes 1, Williamsburg Bowhunter 0! As Paul Harvey would say you can check out the video gallery “for the rest of the story”.

Man, the second week has been really slow- at least for me. The first part of the week was pretty hot and muggy. Hunted some mornings and afternoons, seeing only a few does and yearlings, and those mainly in the afternoons. Mornings have been really slow. Think I hunted at least once everyday except Thursday. Yesterday, Friday, we had hurricane Irene off the coast. Winds were gusting 25-35 mph here- pouring rain at 2:00PM. Looked like a complete bust for sure. Got a break in the rain around 3:30 but the winds continued to howl. Weather channel was calling for tapering rain chances the rest of the day, so I headed to the woods. Figured if I could just get up before it rained again I’d be ok ( had my trusty umbrella ). Thought the deer might actually move after this mess cleared out. Well, the rain did hold off but the wind was relentless. Thought I would be seasick for a while- tree was swaying as much as five feet in all directions! All this for two does and a year and a half old 5-pt. I’m crazy! Got up this morning to go again but it was raining. Crawled back in bed. May or may not go this afternoon. One bright spot this week came when Jeff Burleson, writer for Soth Carolina Sportsman, called and wanted to write an article about the 10-pointer I killed last Wednesday. You can find it on their website- www.SCSportsman.com

Let me recap the first week of the 2011 season. The first two days were disappointing to say the least, especially considering the morning temperatures were outstanding for mid August. The moon, however, was not. Saw virtually nothing either day. Day three, Wednesday, saw things begin to pick up. Had two small bucks come in that morning. In the afternoon things broke open. The sit began with a couple of does coming in, followed late by a bachelor group of four bucks. The third buck out was the “man”- a wide ten pointer. Had some tense moments but, with light running out, managed to get off a good shot with my new PSE Omen Pro which had been recommended to me by Hank Parker. Well, the Omen Pro is now 1 for 1 and when combined with a 100-grain Muzzy has proved to be a deadly machine. Got a clean pass through at 32 yds- double lung shot. He only made it about 75 yds. I was able to capture it all on video ( see video gallery ).  Took the day off Thursday but was back at it on Friday. Saw a couple of does Friday morning and then another bachelor group with at least one shooter Friday afternoon. Closest they got was 75 yds. Hope your season starts out just as successful as mine. Can’t wait until next week. Later…

Well, the third day was a charm. Yesterday morning started out better with a couple of small bucks coming in. Had no idea yesterday afternoon would prove to be so good. The PM hunt started out sort of iffy. I got busted 10 minutes after climbing up. Don’t think it was the wind direction but rather the deer seeing me hooking up my camera equipment. Anyway, a doe and yearling came in about 6:45 and stayed til about 7:30. At about 8:00 things really heated up. A small eight came in followed closely by another pretty good eight pointer. It was only a minute or so before the shooter appeared- obviously the dominant buck. He was followed later by another small buck. I knew immediately the big boy was a shooter. The rest is history! Check the photo gallery for still shots. I’ll have the video uploaded in a day or so. Later…
