Click image to further enlarge. My first gobbler of 2012. April 5th, 7:15AM. Doesn’t look like much of a beard but this was a mature bird. Mites must have eaten into this one- longest strand actually 11 inches. Weight was 18 lbs and spurs were 1 1/8 inches. This was about as easy as it comes- almost too easy. I heard this bird gobble from several hundred yds away. It was already getting light so I hurriedly guessed the approximate location of his roost. I had barely set up when I heard him fly down ( didn’t see him ). When he gobbled on the ground he was only 75 yds away. He walked straight to me- game over!
